The piece

Knife No. 8 is the Buck Skinner, a purpose-built hunting knife made specifically for processing Missouri whitetail deer.

The 4⅜-inch blade was made from a farrier's rasp, giving an old working tool a second life in the field. Much of the original rasp texture was intentionally preserved across the flats, making the steel's history immediately recognizable and giving every inch of the blade a character that new bar stock simply couldn't reproduce.

A pronounced belly provides the sweeping cutting surface wanted in a dedicated skinning knife, while the integrated gut hook adds another field-processing function without requiring a separate tool.

The handle is constructed from G10 with a contrasting G10 liner, shaped with deep contours to provide positive indexing and a secure grip during messy field work. Brass pins add a subtle accent while keeping the overall construction simple and rugged.

At 8½ inches overall, the Buck Skinner is compact enough to carry comfortably while still providing the blade and handle length needed for processing game. A highly visible orange Kydex sheath makes the knife easier to locate in leaves, grass, or around a hunting camp and provides secure retention when carried in the field.

Completed on August 23, 2026, the Buck Skinner became Knife No. 8 from Stigall Bladeworks.
