The piece

Knife No. 5 is a Classic Bowie, built as a custom piece for a biker and fellow veteran in Texas. The design draws from the unmistakable lines of the traditional American Bowie: a substantial blade, sweeping clip point, brass guard, and natural wood handle.

The 8-inch blade is made from 1084 high-carbon steel, with a broad profile and pronounced clip that give the knife its classic character. Rather than overcomplicating the design, the focus was on strong proportions, clean lines, and the kind of substantial feel expected from a Bowie.

The handle is made from stabilized poplar burl, selected for the knots, figuring, and natural variation running throughout the wood. No two pieces of burl develop the same way, giving the knife a character that couldn't be duplicated. A brass guard and brass pins provide a traditional contrast between the polished steel and warm tones of the handle.

At 13 inches overall, No. 5 has the size and presence of a traditional Bowie while remaining balanced around a comfortable, hand-shaped grip.

Completed on August 7, 2026, this was Knife No. 5 from Stigall Bladeworks. More importantly, it was built for someone with a shared connection through military service—a handmade piece leaving the Colorado shop and heading south to a fellow veteran in Texas.

1084, brass, and stabilized burl. A classic American Bowie built from one veteran to another.
